OC-1 An introduction to solo outrigger paddling

Small boat program opportunities

An introduction to solo outrigger paddling

In this program for adults, participants will learn the proper handling of a solo outrigger canoe (OC-1), learn the basics of paddling OC-1, and learn how to perform a huli  (capsize) drill in OC-1. The huli drill involves full submersion in the water and is mandatory  before paddlers can use the club OC-1’s outside of the course. The huli will be done at the end of the session, so paddlers can put away the boats then change as soon as possible afterwards. This is a compressed course held in 1 afternoon as a last opportunity until spring to teach skills required to use the club OC-1’s.  Paddles and PFD’s are provided. Remember to bring a towel, change of clothes and a warm jacket for afterwards. A warm hat can be helpful for a huli drill in cool weather. This 2.5 hour course is from 2 pm – 4:30 pm on Sunday, October 3rd.

GOALS:

Upon completion of this course, paddlers will have learned basic paddling techniques plus maneuvering and steering.  They will know proper equipment handling and safety procedures and understand what to wear and bring with them for paddling.   They will then be able to use club canoes, providing they have a club membership.

SPECIFIC LEARNINGS:

  •   Basic paddle techniques
  • Gear – Selecting a Paddle and PFD which suits you best, and understand how to properly adjust the PFD. As well as learning the best type of clothing materials to wear during your paddle sessions.
  •     Equipment care
