About False Creek

Founded in 1985, the False Creek Racing Canoe Club is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary paddling club that offers training and racing programs in dragon boat, outrigger canoe, and sprint canoe-kayak.  The False Creek sprint canoe-kayak program aims to provide athletes with a fun and challenging environment, and to promote growth/development at all levels of sport.


Assistant Head Coach – High Performance (U16 and up)

Position Type & Length: Full-time, year-round position. 2 year minimum contract with likelihood of extension.

Job Description:

We are looking to hire a full-time Assistant Head Coach who has the ability to train athletes at the highest level, and has the experience of growing a positive, healthy culture and club for athletes of all ages in the sport of sprint canoe/kayak. The Assistant Head Coach will be working alongside the Head Coach primarily focused on training high performance athletes, but also designing and implementing programs from the developmental to high performance level.  The ideal candidate will be working collaboratively with the Head Coach, community leaders, club executives, club coaches, and the Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) to promote and develop year-round paddling programs.  The Assistant Head Coach will also be responsible for providing mentorship opportunities to development coaches, as well as assisting in overseeing the general execution of sprint canoe/kayak programming at all levels throughout the year. The candidate should have experience in understanding how to optimally develop athletes through the various LTAD stages in the sport, and a strong grasp and experience of how to promote and grow the sport at the club and provincial level.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Coaching:

  • Work collaboratively with Head Coach and other coaches to develop and implement a yearly training plan (YTP) for the all ages and abilities;
  • Support all aspects of athlete development: physical and mental training, time management, equipment care, promote good sportsmanship and positive team culture;
  • Attend all regattas in which athletes directly coached by him/her are competing;
  • Attend regattas in which other age groups are competing to provide support for both athletes and coaching staff;
  • Communicate training and regatta schedules with athletes and parents.

Administration and Club Development:

  • Oversee coaching staff and ensure continuity with other canoe-kayak programs;
  • Work in collaboration with Head Coach to manage the application process for grants;
  • Work in collaboration with False Creek club executives, Provincial Sport Organization (PSO), False Creek Community Centre (FCCC), and club coaches to organize training and competitions schedules;
  • Assist with organization and running of paddling related club events and training camps;
  • Oversee all canoe-kayak equipment inventory: Work with parents/volunteers and coaching staff to ensure proper maintenance of club equipment, oversee the purchases of new club equipment, perform maintenance and repair to club equipment as needed;
  • Administration and communication duties around the various club programs.

Experience, Qualifications and Skills:

  • Knowledge of the Long Term Athlete Development Model
  • Experience in coaching canoe-kayak at a competitive level
  • Knowledge of exercise physiology, strength and conditioning
  • NCCP Comp Dev Certified
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC), police record check, Canadian Red Cross Standard First-Aid and CPR/AED “C” or equivalent
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with an interest in club and athlete development at all levels
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair is an asset
  • Experience with trailer towing is an asset

We are looking to hire a full-time Development Head Coach who has the ability to train athletes at the development to high performance level, and has the experience of growing a positive, healthy culture and club for athletes of all ages in the sport of sprint canoe/kayak. The Development Head Coach will be leading the development of our next generation athletes, primarily U15 and under, who are gearing towards racing at Nationals and other provincial/national events one day. The ideal candidate has experience developing athletes from the fundamentals through the LTAD stages and preparing them with the right skills, physically, technically and mentally, so that they develop positive and well-rounded skills as athletes.

This position will also work alongside the Head Coach and Assistant Head Coach to design and implement programs from the developmental to high performance level to ensure a healthy growth of the sport at the club and within the community.  The ideal candidate will be working collaboratively with the Head Coach, community leaders, club executives, club coaches, and the Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) to promote and develop year-round paddling programs.  The Development Head Coach will also be responsible for providing mentorship opportunities and overseeing the other development coaches who will be working with younger athlete groups (e.g., U11, U12) to ensure they are instructing appropriate skills as related to our sport and helping our young athletes grow to their full potential.
