Night Paddling rules are in effect all year round.

The following is required when paddling at night (Sunset to Sunrise):

1.  All paddlers (boats under 7m):

  • Must wear, or mount on the boat (e.g. OC-1, kayak, etc.), a non-flashing (“solid”) white light (all-round light) which is clearly visible 360 degrees all around the boat.
  • This is in accordance with Transport Canada’s requirements for Navigation Lights (see also the complete Safe Boating Guide).

2. Dragon Boats, OC-4, OC-6:

  • Must mount on the stern (back) of the boat a non-flashing (solid) white light (all-round light).
  • May mount on the bow (front) of the boat a red/green navigation light.
  • This red/green/white directional-lighting is in accordance with Transport Canada: Safe Boating Guide, page 31– Human Powered Boats – Rule 25).

3. Coach boats:

  • The bow (front) of the boat must have a red light on the Port (left) side, and a Starboard (right) green light; the stern (back) of the boat must have a non-flashing, white light (all-round).
  • This red/green/white directional-lighting is in accordance with Transport Canada: Safe Boating Guide, page 30 – Power Boats under 12m – Rule 23).

4.   No solo Paddling

  • All paddlers require a partner when paddling in the dark

5.   Solo Paddlers:  Do not paddle West of the Burrard Street Bridge
